Sedation Dentistry

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry involves the use of medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. It is ideal for those with dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, or difficulty sitting still for long treatments.

There are different levels of sedation, ranging from mild relaxation to deep sedation, ensuring a comfortable and stress-free experience.

Who should consider sedation dentistry? (Indications for Sedation Dentistry)

You may benefit from sedation dentistry if you:
✔️ Experience dental anxiety or fear
✔️ Have a low pain tolerance
✔️ Have a strong gag reflex
✔️ Need a long or complex dental procedure
✔️ Have difficulty sitting still due to medical conditions (e.g., Parkinson’s, ADHD)
✔️ Had a traumatic past dental experience

Sedation can make dental visits easier, calmer, and more comfortable for patients of all ages!

What are the different types of sedation dentistry?

✔️ Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas): A mild, fast-acting sedative inhaled through a mask.
✔️ Oral Sedation: A prescription pill taken before the appointment for moderate relaxation.
✔️ IV Sedation: A deeper level of sedation delivered through a vein, allowing for precise control.
✔️ General Anesthesia: Complete unconsciousness, used for major dental surgeries.

Talk to our dentists about your needs and comfort level!

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Yes! Sedation dentistry is extremely safe when administered by trained professionals. Before sedation, we review:
✔️ Medical history & current medications
✔️ Allergies or previous reactions to sedation
✔️ Vital signs during the procedure

For added safety, we closely monitor your heart rate, oxygen levels, and blood pressure throughout your treatment.

Will I be asleep during sedation dentistry?

It depends on the type of sedation:
✔️ Nitrous Oxide & Oral Sedation – You remain awake but deeply relaxed.
✔️ IV Sedation – You are in a twilight state (semi-conscious but won't remember much).
✔️ General Anesthesia – You are fully asleep for major procedures.

For most dental procedures, patients stay relaxed but responsive.

How long does dental sedation last?

✔️ Nitrous Oxide: Wears off within 5-10 minutes after the mask is removed.
✔️ Oral Sedation: Effects last 4-6 hours (grogginess may persist).
✔️ IV Sedation: Recovery can take several hours, with lingering drowsiness.
✔️ General Anesthesia: Full recovery may take a day or more.

Most patients can resume normal activities within 24 hours after moderate sedation.

Can I drive after sedation dentistry?

❌ No driving after oral or IV sedation – You will need a responsible adult to take you home.
✅ Nitrous oxide wears off quickly, so you can drive yourself after the procedure.

We recommend resting at home for the remainder of the day after sedation.

What should my child do after their dental cleaning?

After a cleaning:
✔️ Wait 30 minutes if they had fluoride before eating or drinking
✔️ Brush and floss daily to keep their smile healthy
✔️ Limit sugary snacks and drinks to prevent cavities
✔️ Encourage them to drink plenty of water to wash away bacteria

Good habits = healthy smiles for life!

Can children get sedation dentistry?

Yes! Nitrous oxide is safe for children who:
✔️ Have extreme dental anxiety
✔️ Need multiple procedures in one visit
✔️ Have special needs that make dental care difficult

Can I get sedation for a routine cleaning?

Yes! If you have severe dental anxiety or a strong gag reflex, mild sedation (like nitrous oxide) can make routine cleanings easier and more comfortable.
