Sleep apnea is more than just snoring—it’s a serious condition where your breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. Research has linked untreated sleep apnea to an increased risk of various health conditions including high blood pressure, heart disease, and daytime fatigue. If you or your partner suspects sleep apnea, it’s worth looking into.

Many people don’t realize that a dentist can help treat sleep apnea. At Parker Dental Studio, we offer custom oral appliance therapy as an alternative to CPAP machines. These small, comfortable devices are worn during sleep and work by gently repositioning your lower jaw to keep your airway open. For patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea—or those who can’t tolerate a CPAP—an oral appliance may provide significant relief.

How It Works

1

Sleep Evaluation

We review your symptoms, medical history, and any existing sleep study results. If you haven't had a sleep study, we can help coordinate one.

2

Custom Impressions

Precise impressions of your teeth are taken to fabricate an oral appliance that fits perfectly and comfortably.

3

Fitting & Calibration

Your appliance is fitted and the jaw position is carefully adjusted to find the optimal setting for keeping your airway open.

4

Follow-Up & Monitoring

We schedule follow-ups to fine-tune the appliance and may coordinate a follow-up sleep study to confirm effectiveness.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the signs of sleep apnea?

Common symptoms include: loud snoring, gasping or choking during sleep (often noticed by a partner), waking up with a dry mouth or headache, excessive daytime sleepiness, difficulty concentrating, irritability, and waking frequently during the night. If you experience several of these symptoms, talk to your doctor or dentist about a sleep evaluation.

How does an oral appliance treat sleep apnea?

A mandibular advancement device (MAD) gently positions your lower jaw slightly forward during sleep. This prevents the soft tissues at the back of your throat from collapsing and blocking your airway. The result is reduced snoring, fewer apnea episodes, better oxygen levels, and more restful sleep.

Is an oral appliance as effective as CPAP?

For mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, oral appliances are recognized as an effective treatment option by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. For severe sleep apnea, CPAP is generally considered the gold standard. However, an oral appliance may be recommended for severe cases when a patient cannot tolerate CPAP, since a treatment you actually use is better than one you don’t.

Is the oral appliance comfortable to wear?

Custom-made oral appliances are much more comfortable than you might expect. They’re small, lightweight, and made specifically from impressions of your teeth. Most patients adjust to wearing one within 1 to 2 weeks. Unlike CPAP machines, there are no masks, hoses, or noise to deal with.

Do I need a sleep study before getting an oral appliance?

Yes. A proper diagnosis of sleep apnea through a sleep study (either in a lab or a home sleep test) is required before oral appliance therapy. This ensures the treatment is appropriate for your condition and allows us to compare results after treatment. We can help coordinate the process if you haven’t had a study yet.

Does insurance cover oral appliance therapy?

Oral appliances for diagnosed sleep apnea are often covered by medical insurance (not dental insurance), since sleep apnea is a medical condition. Coverage varies by plan, so our team will help verify your benefits and navigate the pre-authorization process. Out-of-pocket costs typically range from $1,500 to $3,000 without insurance.

Can a dentist really treat sleep apnea?

Absolutely. Dentists with training in dental sleep medicine are qualified to fabricate and manage oral appliance therapy for sleep apnea. We work in collaboration with your physician or sleep specialist to ensure your treatment is comprehensive and effective. The dentist’s role is the appliance; the physician’s role is the diagnosis and overall management.

Dr. Trivedi is very kind and caring. He called me at home to answer my questions about a procedure. Dr. Trivedi was very professional and did a great job. I appreciated that occasionally he'd ask how I was doing and that was comforting. He's got a great personality too!
