If your dentist or hygienist has recommended a deep cleaning, it means they’ve found signs of gum disease—and catching it early is a very good thing. A deep cleaning (clinically called scaling and root planing) goes below the gumline to remove the bacteria, plaque, and tartar that regular brushing and routine cleanings can’t reach.

At Parker Dental Studio, our experienced hygienists perform deep cleanings with a gentle, thorough approach. The goal is to stop gum disease in its tracks, reduce inflammation, and give your gums a chance to heal and reattach to your teeth. Many patients begin to notice improvement in the weeks following treatment.

How It Works

1

Assessment

We measure your periodontal pockets and review X-rays to determine the extent of gum disease and plan your treatment.

2

Numbing

The treatment area is gently numbed with local anesthesia so you stay comfortable throughout the procedure.

3

Scaling

Your hygienist carefully removes plaque and tartar from below the gumline using specialized ultrasonic and hand instruments.

4

Root Planing

The root surfaces are smoothed to help gums reattach and make it harder for bacteria to accumulate in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?

A regular cleaning (prophylaxis) cleans above the gumline and is meant for patients with healthy gums. A deep cleaning goes below the gumline to remove bacteria and tartar from the root surfaces of your teeth. Deep cleanings are specifically designed to treat gum disease (periodontitis) and are recommended when periodontal pockets have formed between your teeth and gums.

Does a deep cleaning hurt?

We numb the area with local anesthesia before beginning, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. You may feel some pressure and vibration. After the numbing wears off, mild soreness and sensitivity is normal for a few days. Over-the-counter pain medication and warm salt water rinses can help with recovery.

How do I know if I need a deep cleaning?

Signs that you may need a deep cleaning include: red, swollen, or bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, gums that have pulled away from your teeth, loose teeth, or periodontal pockets measuring 4mm or deeper. Your dentist and hygienist will measure your pockets during your exam and recommend treatment based on the clinical findings.

How long does a deep cleaning take?

A deep cleaning typically takes 1 to 2 hours. Depending on the severity, it may be completed in one visit or split into two visits (treating one side of the mouth at a time). Your hygienist will recommend the best approach based on your specific situation.

What happens after a deep cleaning?

Your gums may be tender and slightly swollen for a few days. Stick to soft foods, avoid very hot or cold foods, and rinse gently with warm salt water. Over the following weeks, many patients notice their gums begin to look healthier—less red, less swollen, and less prone to bleeding. A follow-up visit is typically scheduled 4 to 6 weeks later to check your healing progress.

Will I need deep cleanings regularly?

After your initial deep cleaning, you’ll typically be placed on a periodontal maintenance schedule—cleanings every 3 to 4 months instead of every 6 months. This more frequent schedule helps keep gum disease under control and prevents it from worsening. Over time, if your gum health improves significantly, the interval may be extended.

How much does a deep cleaning cost?

Deep cleaning costs typically range from $200 to $400 per quadrant (quarter of the mouth). Most dental insurance plans cover deep cleanings when they are medically necessary due to gum disease. Our team will verify your coverage and give you a clear cost estimate before scheduling treatment.
